VMC History

Champions, records and the complete story of Victorian Milers Club.

Navigate
VMC History
A Living History

When the Victorian Milers Club was established in 2005, its stated aim was “to foster and promote middle distance running” in Victoria. Amongst the elite, certainly, but also at all levels of our sport.

How have we done? The most basic statistic is participation. We have grown and grown beyond the wildest imaginings when we staged our first meeting at Box Hill on 27 October 2005. Average entries per meeting first exceeded 100 in our second season of 2006–07, exceeded 200 in 2011–12, 300 in 2016–17 and have been at 400 and above since 2022–23.

Big numbers are but one measure; the quality has also been high. Particularly so on the female side: although we have struggled to fulfill the aspiration of equal numbers of male and female competitors — the male:female ratio sits at around 60:40 — the support from the state’s elite female runners has been a strong point.

As it became clear that Victorian Milers was a viable concept attracting considerable support from Victorian — and interstate — athletes, the club began to accumulate considerable revenue. Most came from entry fees (see growth beyond our wildest imaginings above!), the rest from sponsors.

Step by step we started to redistribute our accumulated revenue back to the participants. First off was an annual scholarship to the outstanding male and female athletes of the season. A further series of measures followed as bonus money went to athletes of the meeting, to performances at or above set levels, for Milers Club records and for achievement of the automatic qualifying standards for Olympic Games, world championships or world U20 (junior) championships.

Most recently, in 2025 we adopted a ‘finals’ concept for the last meeting of our season with the fastest performers in Milers Club 800 and 1500 over the previous meetings competing for prize money.

Conscious of the reality that most of our performance bonus money was going the way of the elite, we initiated a ‘Dash for Cash’ in which one male and one female race at each of our meetings — drawn at random, the A-race excluded — has a cash prize for the winning athlete.

All in all, you’d say the Victorian Milers Club is meeting the goals it set itself back in 2005. This brief summation is titled “a living history” for a reason: we intend to keep on doing just that for a long time to come.

Who We Are
About VMC

The Victorian Milers Club is Australia's premier middle-distance racing series, dedicated to the 800m, 1500m, Mile, and 3000m. We provide a competitive, graded racing environment for athletes of all abilities — from first-time racers to Olympians.

VMC Archive
Results / Rankings

The VMC results archive brings together official meet results across seasons, events and grades. These results power the season and all-time rankings, personal bests, athlete profiles and club statistics on this website.

Results are checked and matched to athletes, clubs, dates and venues as the archive develops. Historical records may be updated when new source material becomes available.

Result corrections

If you notice an incorrect time, placing, athlete name, club, date or venue—or if a result is missing—please email vicmilers@athsvic.org.au.

Please include the season, meet, event and athlete, along with supporting documentation wherever possible. An official results sheet is ideal; video, photographs or another reliable source can also help us verify the correction before the archive is updated.

Purpose
Mission Statement

"To provide the highest quality middle-distance racing in Victoria — accessible to all abilities, honouring the tradition of the mile, and fostering a community built on authentic competition."

February 2026 · VMC Policies
Policies

Why have policies?

The Victorian Milers Club provides athletes of all abilities the opportunity to take part in graded middle-distance races. Aligned with Athletics Victoria but independent in operation, VMC aims to deliver high-quality, athlete-centred meets.

These consistent guidelines provide clarity for competitors and meet organisers. VMC reserves the right to adjust policies as circumstances require.

Seeding

Guidelines Races are seeded from actual recent bests rather than potential or training times. Discretion may be shown for strong performances at other distances or athletes returning with a proven racing record.

Purpose To ensure fair, competitive races and prevent abuse of race grading.

Insurance

Guidelines Insurance is covered by Athletics Victoria registration or an equivalent for interstate and international runners. Other runners may participate at their own risk.

Purpose To ensure accident protection is available.

Mixed Gender Races

Guidelines Mixed-gender races are not permitted in higher grades. At VMC’s discretion, mixed races may be used in lower grades to minimise programme length.

Purpose To protect the integrity of higher-grade women’s races and provide competitive opportunities for female athletes.

Age

Guidelines Athletes must turn 13 during the calendar year to participate in VMC events.

Purpose To support age-appropriate competition pathways.

Refunds

Guidelines Athletes who cancel before 10am on race day may receive a free entry to a later race that season instead of a refund. No card or cash refunds are offered.

Purpose To retain a simple entry process and cover card-processing costs.

Uniform & Bib Numbers

Guidelines Victorian athletes are asked to wear their club uniform and Athletics Victoria registration number.

Purpose To help the Starter’s Marshall, Finish Marshalls, announcer and recorder identify athletes.

Event Schedule

Guidelines Events generally run slowest to fastest. VMC may amend the order for lighting, presentations or special events.

Purpose To provide consistency and build a supportive atmosphere for elite races.

Meet Start Time

Guidelines Meets usually start at 5:45pm. If field sizes indicate a programme longer than 3.5 hours, VMC may start earlier and will advertise the change by email and social media.

Purpose To maintain a familiar start while keeping the programme reasonable.

Field Size

Guidelines Typical fields are 8–12 for 800m/1000m, 12–18 for 1500m, and up to 30 for 3K/5K races.

Purpose To balance safe, competitive racing with a programme of 3.5 hours or less.

Heat Listings

Guidelines Heat listings are decided two days before the event and published 24 hours before the meeting. Changes on the night are difficult to accommodate.

Purpose To minimise confusion and allow organisers to communicate fields clearly.

Pacemaking

Guidelines The Pacemakers programme began in 2025–26. A-race pacers receive $75; volunteer pacers are welcomed for other heats. Pacers wear a Saints singlet, receive free entry to their next VMC race, and should register interest at least 24 hours before the meet.

Purpose To build a pool of pacemakers who help athletes achieve personal bests and fast times.

Electronic Timing

Guidelines Electronic timing is provided on a best-effort basis and may be affected by cost, lighting and operator availability.

Purpose To provide accurate results while keeping meetings efficient.

Check In

Guidelines Athletes must check in as per race instructions provided in the AV race confirmation email and on the AV website. Collect your hip number at the registration desk and report to the Starter’s Marshall in good time.

Purpose To keep the programme moving and communicate fields accurately.

Results

Guidelines Results are published as soon as possible, usually on the evening of the meeting and almost always within 24 hours.

Purpose To give athletes prompt formal confirmation of their race times.

Meet Awards

Guidelines Awards include Athlete of the Meet, Encouragement, Dash for Cash, VMC records, major-championship qualifying and the Performance Incentive Scheme. Awards are announced after any required committee adjudication.

Purpose To keep awards relevant, fair and timely.

Finals Night

Guidelines The fifth meet is VMC Finals Night. Athletes must have competed at least once that season. The 800m A heats qualify the fastest eight men and women from the previous four meets; the 1500m A heats qualify the fastest 12 men and women. Normal registration remains required.

Purpose To give VMC’s fastest athletes a finals-style race and reward the A-race winners.

Policy version: February 2026. VMC may review and amend these policies annually or as required.

Athlete Guidelines
Shoe Policy

Guidelines

The shoe policy applies to all open events. For this policy, every VMC event is considered open, so the policy applies to every VMC athlete. Athletes must wear compliant shoes for performances to be eligible for records, awards and championship qualifying standards. Athletes wearing non-compliant shoes may compete, but their performances cannot be ratified for those purposes.

Please click here for the current list of shoes deemed approved by World Athletics (listed under Manuals & Guidelines). Please note that World Athletics continually amend the Approved Shoe List as they complete their testing of shoes, therefore athletes should ensure they check this list on a regular basis.

Full list | List of Approved Athletic Shoes

Rationale

VMC enforces the World Athletics Shoe Rule to ensure records and qualifying standards can be ratified and for consistency and athlete education.

Purpose

To provide clarity to athletes on shoe rules and requirements.

VMC Team Competition
Club Championship

The race for the Club Championship

Every VMC race contributes to a season-long contest between clubs. The Club Championship celebrates the depth, consistency and collective ambition of each team — every fast finish can help move a club up the table.

The Club Championship begins in the 2026–27 season. Points are awarded from official results using the rules below, building a meet-by-meet leaderboard across the season.

How club points are calculated

1. Combine the heats. Every official heat in the same gender and event is treated as one results list. The fastest eligible athlete is first, the next fastest is second, and so on.

2. Score the first 20 eligible positions. The points table runs from 50 points for first through to 1 point for 19th and 20th.

3. Maximum of three athletes per club, per event. Only a club’s three fastest eligible athletes can score in any one event. A fourth athlete from the same club cannot take a fourth scoring place.

4. Roll-down applies. When a club’s fourth athlete would otherwise score, that position is skipped and the next eligible athlete from another club moves into the available scoring position. For example, if Box Hill athletes finish 3rd, 5th, 7th and 12th, the 3rd, 5th and 7th athletes score; the 12th athlete does not, and the next eligible athlete outside the top 20 can receive the points that roll down.

5. Add the event totals. Each club’s scoring athletes are added together across the events held at that meet. A standard meet with women’s and men’s 800m and 1500m can therefore have up to 12 club scorers.

6. Championship rounds. At the designated championship meet, every club point awarded for that meet is doubled.

Club eligibility: Points are credited only to recognised clubs. Unattached athletes, national or state teams and other representative labels can still appear in the individual results and rankings, but do not add to a club total.

Race Support · VMC Pacers Program
Pacemaking

Pacers are key to achieving fast times. The VMC Pacers Program gives athletes opportunities to help others achieve personal bests and national or international qualifying standards, while contributing to the sport and getting a quality workout.

Key points

Payment Pacers in the A race are paid a flat rate of $75. Athletes may volunteer to pace B grade and lower races to gain experience and help other athletes.

Race matching Men’s races must be paced by a male and women’s races by a female. Pacers must be at least 16 years old on race day.

Nomination Nominate in advance at vicmilers@athsvic.org.au. VMC aims to confirm allocations no later than 24 hours before the race.

On the night Check in with the Chief Start Marshall. Pacers receive an orange Saints pacer singlet before the race, which they may keep.

Pace plan and selection

Agreed pace times and anticipated distance will usually be confirmed before the race. Multiple pacers may be used in one race, but they must pace the same agreed lead time at the front of the field; separate mid-pack target times are not used. VMC does not accept responsibility if a pacer does not meet the agreed times.

Where there are more pacers than places, VMC selects at its discretion using current AV/AA form, evidence of pacing experience and capability, and—where relevant—input from the coach or coaches of athletes targeting a particular time.

Volunteer pacers receive a credit for their next VMC event or race, making their next entry free.

Pacer responsibilities

Pacers are expected to:

  • be truthful about their season, personal-best times and current form;
  • run at the stated pace, regardless of whether the field follows;
  • wear the orange Saints pacer singlet;
  • leave the track once the agreed pacing distance is complete without disrupting the race;
  • tell VMC if they also intend to race that evening and consider whether racing could affect their pacing duties;
  • notify VMC at vicmilers@athsvic.org.au as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours, if they cannot perform the duty.

Further information

More than one pacer may share the agreed lead pace in an A race. VMC decides allocations case by case; paid pacing places are confirmed before the meet.

Pacers who do not attend and provide no warning may not be accepted for future pacing duties.

Media
Photography & Videography

To ensure the safety and privacy of our athletes, all photographers and videographers at Victorian Milers Club meets must be officially accredited by the committee. Unauthorised professional media equipment is not permitted inside the competition perimeter.

Accredited media must provide proof of a valid **Working with Children Check (WWCC)** and hold appropriate Public Liability Insurance. Certification must be presented to the Meet Director upon arrival.

Rules & Regulations:

• Media personnel must remain outside the track rail at all times unless specifically escorted by a VMC official.
• Flash photography is strictly prohibited during race starts and as athletes approach the finish line.
• Do not obstruct the line of sight for the photo-finish equipment or meet officials.
• All captured content remains subject to Athletics Victoria and VMC media usage policies.

To apply for media accreditation for the upcoming season, please contact vicmilers@athsvic.org.au.
